You’re (probably) not special

Sorry. But not that sorry as once you realise this, you can take control of your life.

I love my children more than anything, I would die to protect them and they are the most special people in the world… to me. They are certainly unique and they have the potential to lead great lives but they are just two (little) people in a world of billions.

The world isn’t just going to give them what they want because they are special. They have to decide what they want to achieve, then figure out how to accomplish it. Even if they have been born with a special talent or skill, they’d still have to work incredibly hard to achieve their potential. Do you think Usain Bolt would have won all those medals without dedicating his life to sprinting?

I spent the majority of my life believing I was special. I thought things would just happen for me because I was special. To an extent, stuff would just happen for me and this is probably what cemented this mindset.

I’m one of those people who is good at everything but great at nothing. I would come second or third in every sport at school, rarely first. I achieved my average academic results without really trying. I can get by in most things with minimal effort so I rarely put in maximum effort.

As a result, I never really thought about what I wanted to achieve. When I was 10, I thought I was going to be a professional football player. However, I didn’t need to train or do drills, or practice on my own every day like I could have. I was special, I didn’t need to do that.

When I was a bit older, I figured I would just go to university and become some sort of business millionaire. After working for a couple of years, I tried to start my own business. Very little planning and effort went into it. I was special, it would just work out for me. It didn’t.

This is when the penny started to drop and I realised that I would actually have to put some effort into achieving my goals. I’ve spent recent years trying to figure out what those goals are. The only thing I’ve always known I wanted was a family of my own and that’s the one the few things I’ve ever really TRIED to achieve.
